#20Gr18: Top 18 Things Headed Into 2018
Okay, so I have wanted to do a side-by-side video streaming test for a while now, and I needed to make some ‘status updates’ so I figured I’d kill two birds with one stone.
I did a search on Tweet Binder for #20Gr18 and nothing has been posted in the last 7 days, so I'm officially announcing the hashtag here! In a minute, I'm going to do a countdown of the 18 Gr18 - my top 18 greatest things going into 2018. First, I need to make a little life update.
As many of you know, after graduating high school I earned my BFA and MA at Chapman University in Orange, CA. I began working at Chapman full-time in 2005 and served there for almost 12 years. Before resigning, I was serving Chapman as Assistant Vice President of Web and Digital Media and had an incredible team of 14 talented individuals. As much as I love Chapman University, I'm proud to say I'm growing up - I'm finally leaving college!
In early December, I started a new position at Milken Community School in the Bel-Air area of Los Angeles, and I currently serve on their new Marketing team. I'm already amazed by the kindness of the community, the incredible caliber of the faculty and staff, and the talent and brilliance of the students. I am truly honored and humbled to be part of this tremendous team and this amazing community.
In my first two weeks at Milken, I've already seen two of their alumni named as Forbes' 30 under 30 and learned about a student working in Milken's Guerin Institute. In this FAB LAB, the student is using 3d printing and laser cutting to make her very own musical instrument.
In a minute, I'm going to go over my 18 Gr18, and encourage everyone to do the same using the #20Gr18 hashtag, and - Spoiler alert - my new job will be on that list.
I'm also making time for personal projects. There's a new section on my company's website, www.pogonacreative.com, for narrative filmmaking. This is where some friends and I will discuss narrative filmmaking ideas, and post treatments and scripts. Head over to www.pogonacreative.com or Google P O G O N A Creative for more information.
Okay, so here are my top 18 great things headed into 2018, otherwise known as #20Gr18.
Joshua Snyder wrote a script based on a movie idea I had. It's a horror-comedy wine tasting vampire movie called "Vinepire." Josh actually has two versions of it - a "B movie/popcorn" version of it, and then an independent film version. Both are very good and more information is available at pogonacreative.com. Only Joshua Snyder can take the skeleton of an idea and write two different feature-length scripts in such a short period of time.
I'm excited to finally be simul-web-casting with a few different devices and platforms at once. I've wanted to do this for a while but have not had time, so this is kinda 20Gr18 if you ask me. In general, technology is exciting right now
The state of marketing is great right now. I think that marketers in the past were painted with a broad brush as people who tricked you into buying something, but the more that marketing merges with customer service the better. I think the more that marketing transitions from the old methods to the new methods - thinks like inbound marketing, permission-based marketing, content marketing, etc. I think that's a good thing and is something that is mutually beneficial for the consumer and the marketer at the same time.
We had a great year of wine tasting with our friends and families and we are working on updating our "ultimate wine taster's map" which includes our favorite wineries everywhere from Paso Robles to Tuscany, Italy. I'll link to it below. Our current favorite wine is still Rombauer Zinfandel, but...
Berghold Vineyards is quickly becoming our favorite winery. They are in the Lodi area of California. I recommend you check them out - everything is good.
I had the opportunity to see Josh Snyder's show at Flappers Comedy Club in Burbank in the last few years, and he's amazing - better each time we see him. If you are in the LA or OC area, head up to Burbank and make sure to see one of Josh's shows. That leads me to...
Josh actually invited me to participate in a comedy show specific to Chapman University alumni, so I did that last year. Fortunately, there is no recording of it but I think it went pretty well for my first attempt at stand-up. I really just told a story, so I guess I didn't even really attempt stand up but it was a fun experience, and it gave me an entirely new appreciation for how tough that job is.
New methods of cooking - we have a smoker and a sous vide now, and we love cooking with them. Slow cooked meats on the smoker are amazing, and I love the precision of our Anova sous vide. Speaking of new methods of cooking...
We signed up for Hello Fresh and Blue Apron last year and like those services. I prefer Hello Fresh but, to each their own. Also on the "mail me stuff" front...
I'm officially a Stitch-fixer now. As many of you know, my wife is a lead at StitchFix and I'm hooked. I'm wearing a Stitchfix shirt now, and I really enjoy the clothing. I also enjoy NOT SHOPPING. I hate shopping.
One of the 18 Gr8 things going into 2018 was Jeff and Nicole's wedding. We're so happy for them, and it was wonderful to see...
Awesome people. We're so blessed with awesome friends. I want to name names here but I won't because I'll forget someone and get in trouble, but Adri and I talk frequently about how lucky we are to have such awesome friends.
I'm excited to be writing again - working on "film stuff." I'm working with Joshua Snyder right now on filmmaking and screenwriting stuff and it is a lot of fun. I mentioned Vinepire before, but there’s lots of other stuff up at pogonacreative.com as well, including information on my marketing consulting services.
As I mentioned a moment ago, I'm excited about my new job - proud to be growing up and finally leaving college! My time at Milken has been great so far, and it’s definitely high on my 18 Gr18 list.
I have a wonderful extended family. I love my aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws - you name it!
I also have an amazing nuclear family. A great mom, dad, and brother. Related is...
My father, who you may know had some health issues a few years ago, recently scored a 110% on his recent stress test and it's wonderful to have him so healthy again.
Celebrating 6.5 years of marriage to my kind, wonderful, and lovely wife!
That was my top 18 great things headed into 2018, otherwise known as #20Gr18. I can't claim that I was the first to use #20Gr18, but I can say that nobody has used it in the last seven days! I'm hoping the hashtag catches on and if it does, I'll be excited to be at least on the front end of it.
So here's to the new year - Let's make 20Gr18 again? No good?
